In The Balance

Created as a unique site responsive installation, In the Balance considers the precarious environmental and humanitarian challenge facing the world today.

Individual woodblock prints of sonic resonance traces are printed on Japanese Kozo paper which are installed to flow along the wall. Held by the strength of their collective presence and dependant on the notion of collaboration and coexistence to maintain a balance and flow.

The first iteration of this work was created for The MTG International Print Triennial, the triennial has been a significant event in the global landscape of art festivals since its inception in the 1960s offering a snapshot of international contemporary print, concepts, and ideas.

For it’s 23rd edition, artists were invited to respond to the theme Momentum, ‘to critically interpret the reality that collectively we are rushing towards a climate and humanitarian catastrophe, while creating new digital tools for interfering with the fabric of society’. MTG 2024

The second iteration has been created for Grounding at The Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool. In this instance, In The Balance responds to the sonic signature of the North Pier captured using hydrophones at low tide. Visualising the rhythm of the ever-present tide and the cooperation and care needed to maintain the balance of our fragile shoreline.
