Matrix of Movement
‘Matrix of Movement’ (2016/20) investigates perceptions of post-industrial wetlands experienced through walking. Drawing, printmaking and digital translation combine to create immersive drawings and works on paper exploring how digital technologies change our human experience and engagement with place.
Walking journeys over a 3-year period enabled comprehensive exploration of 4 locations in 2 countries. Data collection from protected wetlands was made with commercial geomatics technology from FARO and Reigel. 3D documentation software was then used to confront traditional interpretations of post industrial landscapes leading to a reconsideration of liminal wetland spaces.
Opposing ideas traditionally exist between Northern and Southern hemisphere cultures on ideas of wayfaring and navigation. An International artist residency in 2016 and travel bursary through Artist Newsletter enabled focused research in Australia. This research resulted in new methodology demonstrating the ability to straddle the corporeal experience of walking and the possibility of new perspectives extracted from digital modeling. The act of walking followed the traditions of the wayfarer, the adoption of commercial mapping technology for the collection of data offered a connection to the western traditions of measuring landscape and finally the act of performative drawing and use of analogue processes combined to link the senses, thought, materiality and embodiment.
‘Deciduous Drawings – Insoluble Ink ‘ an essay written by Deborah Stevenson is considered integral to the project as a contextualising document linking the visual works and the residency research. – link to online publication.
